Abstract
THIS COLLECTION OF READINGS, WHICH PRESENTS CURRENT TRENDS IN THE FIELD OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, IS OFFERED AS A BASIC TEXT FOR THE STUDENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR THE LAY READER. ARTICLES AND REPORTS BY EXPERTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD ARE GROUPED IN FIVE PARTS. PART I DISCUSSES THE NATURE AND IMPACT OF CRIME IN MODERN AMERICAN SOCIETY AND FOCUSES ON THE HISTORICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ROLES OF LAW ENFORCERS. IN PART TWO POLICE EFFECTIVENESS IS RELATED TO MATTERS OF POLICE ORGANIZATION, ADMINISTRATION, AND PERSONNEL SELECTION AND TRAINING. THE READER IS FAMILIARIZED IN PART THREE WITH PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION AND INTERROGATION. METHODS AND PROCEDURES OF POLICE PATROL AND TRAFFIC CONTROL FUNCTIONS ARE PRESENTED IN PART FOUR. FACETS OF THE POLICE IMAGE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY ARE DISCUSSED IN THE FINAL SECTION, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD LAW AND ORDER, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS.
