INTENDED FOR STUDENTS AND OTHERS INTERESTED IN THE STUDY OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, THIS TEXT CONTAINS FORTY-FOUR SELECTIONS WHICH EXPLORE THE DEFINITIONS, CAUSES, NATURE, AND TREATMENT OF DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF SEVERAL DEFINITIONS OF DELINQUENCY AND SOME STATISTICAL DATA, THE SOCIAL MATRIX IN WHICH ALL BEHAVIOR DEVELOPS IS EXAMINED. IN ADDITION TO RECOGNITION OF INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS AND VARYING SOCIAL CLASS CULTURES, SOCIAL UNREST AMONG THE YOUNG IS CONSIDERED HERE. THIS BACKGROUND ENABLES THE READER TO MOVE EASILY INTO STUDIES OF SUBCULTURES OF DELINQUENCY, OFFENSES SPECIFICALLY TYPICAL OF BOYS AND GIRLS, AND THE PRESSURES OF HOME AND SCHOOL ON JUVENILES. NEXT, PROGRAMS AND AGENCIES CONCERNED WITH PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF DELINQUENCY ARE DISCUSSED, INCLUDING THE POLICE, COURTS, PROBATION, INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT, AND COMMUNITY PREVENTION PROGRAMS. THE TEXT CONCLUDES WITH A LOOK AT THE FUTURE BY EXAMINING THE ADULT EXPERIENCES OF THE GLUECK RESEARCH GROUP OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
