This article describes OLIVE, a technology platform used to build interactive, virtual training environments.
Abstract
In the real world, a terrorist attack is unlikely to strike in the middle of an open field. Yet many training scenarios occur in these types of environments and are difficult and time consuming to plan and execute. OLIVE technology, developed by Forterra Systems Inc., allows a way of offering realistic training applications in a virtual environment. The technology creates 3-D worlds in which training participants interact with one another and gain experience working, for example, in crowded metropolitan areas during a terrorist attack. OLIVE offers the ability for multiple agencies to be involved in the same training scenarios by linking agencies remotely within the training environment. The developer explains that OLIVE is about offering a realistic training environment; trainers are responsible for going into the system and customizing the specific learning objectives. An evaluation mechanism is built in; OLIVE records the training session from each participant’s point-of-view for later evaluation. Overall, OLIVE offers the technology that can help prepare emergency personnel for unexpected disasters in almost any environment. Exhibits
