This article describes the latest technological advances in police training simulators.
Abstract
Training simulators are important law enforcement tools for transferring classroom knowledge to the street. Providing new officers with simulations provides valuable on-the-job training that is better learned in safe simulated environments than out on the street. The judgment to use force, especially, takes practice and today’s simulators are up to the task of providing a realistic training simulation. Training simulators from Advanced Interactive Systems are described, including the PRISim, which trains officers in judgment and use of force, and the SVS, which allows personnel from multiple agencies to respond to a large-scale event and interact with one another via a network connection. FATS Inc., has developed BlueFire technology, which allows officers to move freely in tetherless weapon simulators. The Range 3000 XP4 from IES is another training simulator that is able to be used almost anywhere and offers a wide assortment of scenarios with vast branching possibilities. The system can gauge judgment as well as shooting accuracy. Laser Shot offers a number of training simulators for law enforcement, such as the LE-PRO, a high-end simulator for use-of-force and shooting assessments. VirTra Systems’ interactive, high-definition, virtual reality platforms are described as immersing officers in floor-to-ceiling training scenarios. Driving simulation systems from Doron are reviewed, as is the Driver Training Systems from FAAC, which are designed to improve driving skills, situational awareness, tactics, and decisionmaking skills. The PatrolSim series of driving simulators from GE Driver Development use the real interior of squad cars and allow officers to experience high-speed chases and extreme weather conditions.
