This kit presents background information, guidelines, and sample media messages and camera-ready print materials for use in conducting community campaigns to prevent and reduce problems associated with marijuana use by youth.
Abstract
The materials are designed for use by parents, teachers, police officers, religious leaders, business owners, and youth. The campaign theme is "Marijuana Is a Drug. Help Our Kids Understand." The campaign aims to increase awareness of the increase in marijuana use since the early 1990's, its frequent mixing with other drugs such as PCP or crack, and its effects; to assist young people in refusing marijuana or stopping use; to involve adult caregivers and mentors; and to change norms promoting the use of marijuana. Campaign leaders are encouraged to adapt this theme to their own community or group and their own materials. Other suggestions are to acknowledge and incorporate the culture of the people being reached, collaborate with other community groups, spread the message, and use the camera-ready artwork in this kit.
