John C. Lawn, Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), summarizes his agency's efforts to enforce Federal laws governing illegal drug trafficking and controlled substances and answers questions in a 1987 hearing by the Subcommittee on Crime regarding reauthorization of the DEA.
Abstract
Mr. Lawn's testimony begins by summarizing DEA's budget request for FY 1988, statistics on 1986 asset seizures, and staffing levels. He describes joint antidrug trafficking programs with Latin American countries, such as Operation Blast Furnace in Bolivia. Diversion control programs designed to detect and prevent the diversion of licit drugs from legitimate channels are reviewed. In this context, Mr. Lawn discusses cooperative efforts with State and local agencies. In the prevention and education area, the DEA Administrator addresses the agency's new Demand Reduction Section, established to coordinate prevention efforts, and its Sports Drug Awareness Program, which involves athletes and coaches. Committee members queried the witness about DEA's allocation of funds provided by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, costs of the TEMPEST program, injuries to agents during raids of clandestine laboratories, and relations with Columbia. A prepared statement, along with additional questions submitted to the witness and his answers are included.
