A hearing on the reauthorization of the Justice System Improvement Act of 1979 examined the funding needs of a group of programs sponsored by the Office of Justice Assistance, Research and Statistics (OJARS).
Abstract
OJARS programs include LEAA, the Federal criminal justice research program of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Stanley E. Morris, associate deputy attorney general, U.S. Department of Justice, discussed the budget proposal which provides for the continuation of NIJ and BJS programs and establishes a small Office of Justice Research and Statistics. Appended material include a Rand study, 'Varieties of Criminal Behavior, Summary and Policy Implications,' a letter from the assistant Attorney General to the Speaker of the House of Representatives containing a legislative proposal to reauthorize and extend portions of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, and a letter from the U.S. Attorney General to the chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary proposing the official termination of LEAA by April 15, 1982.
