This report presents some findings from a program of research into the causes and correlates of juvenile delinquency, based on data gathered through a series of three coordinated longitudinal studies focusing on serious delinquency, violence, and juvenile drug use.
Abstract
The findings presented here relate to the epidemiology of violence, the characteristics and arrest histories of chronic violent adolescent offenders, and the delinquent behaviors of juvenile gang members. The studies focused on prediction of the onset of violent attitudes and behaviors among juveniles, risk factors for violence, developmental pathways, and explanatory factors of physical fighting. Finally, the research program investigated characteristics of resilient youth, and the correlations of child maltreatment, gun availability, and drugs with delinquency. 24 figures, 10 tables, and 45 references
