RECIDIVISM STUDY OF 606 FORMER MALE PRISONERS 10 YEARS AFTER THEIR RELEASE FROM 14 ITALIAN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN 1961.
Abstract
THE STUDY POPULATION CONSTITUTES ALL THE PRISONERS RELEASED FROM THESE INSTITUTIONS IN 1961. THE STUDY INCLUDES STATISTICS ON THE OFFENDERS' CITIZENSHIP, GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN AND RESIDENCE, AGE, CRIMINAL RECORDS, TYPE OF OFFENSE, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, AND INSTITUTION OF INCARCERATION. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT RECIDIVISM IS A FUNCTION OF PREVIOUS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, THE AGES OF THE OFFENDER AT THE TIME OF HIS RELEASE, AND HIS RESIDENCE IN AN URBAN ENVIROMMENT. RECIDIVISM SEEMS TO BE MORE LIKELY WITH PROPERTY CRIMES. THE LIKELIHOOD OF RECIDIVISM ALSO SEEMS TO VARY INVERSELY WITH THE AMOUNT OF TIME WHICH HAS PASSED SINCE RELEASE. THE FINDINGS ALSO INDICATE THAT PAROLE HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT IN PREVENTING RECIDIVISM. --IN ITALIAN
