Recidivism rates among adult ex-offenders released from correctional institutions in Puerto Rico and subsequently returned into the correctional system are tabulated for a given fiscal year and the following 3-year period.
Abstract
This report covers the 1974-1975 fiscal year and the following 36 months and consists chiefly of statistics and data in tabular form. Based upon a precise definition of recidivists (i.e., individuals who commit an offense while on supervised liberty, probation, or parole), this report reflects such classification variables on the incidence of recidivism as individuals' entry and reentry into the correctional system; year of reentry; correctional institutions from which recidivists were released; and times they committed new offenses. Offender demographic data is also presented, including sex, age, marital status, and residence. The report recommends that recidivism data be added to the information stored in the Criminal Justice Information System. The data can be obtained from the Computerized Criminal Histories and Offender Based Transaction Statistics System. Fingerprints should be used as the only reliable identification basis for each individual. Eleven statistical tables are provided. Tables appear in both Spanish and English.
