Annotation

Recidivism rates of probationers in three programs established by the Texas Adult Probation Commission were studied using samples of persons placed in the programs during 1985, 1986, and 1987.

Abstract

The three programs were Intensive Probation, Specialized Caseload, and Restitution Center programs. Recidivism was defined as incarceration by the Texas Department of Corrections and was measured for periods of 12, 24, and 36 months. Thirteen percent of the people ages 17-25 recidivated within 12 months, and 21 percent recidivated within 36 months. The rates were lower for older offenders. Persons with prior felony histories had a 13-percent recidivism rate in 12 months and a 20-percent rate within 36 months. Recidivism was also calculated for 12 types of offenses. Data tables.
