CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS WHO ARE REPEATEDLY SUBJECTED TO CRIMINAL ACTS ARE INVESTIGATED, USING DATA FROM A SURVEY OF 300 VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIME IN THE NEW YORK CITY AREA.
Abstract
THIS ARTICLE IS CONCERNED WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE TYPES OF CRIMES WITH WHICH THE RECIDIVIST VICTIM IS CONFRONTED, THE SOCIAL CONTEXT IN WHICH RECIDIVIST VICTIMIZATION OCCURS, THE RECIDIVIST VICTIMS' PERCEPTION OF THE PERPETRATORS, THE PHYSICAL SETTING OF CRIMES AGAINST RECIDIVIST VICTIMS, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF SOCIAL BACKGROUND AND ATTITUDINAL ORIENTATIONS TO THE INCIDENCE OF RECIDIVIST VICTIMIZATION. RESULTS OF THE INITIAL STUDY INDICATE THAT THE SEX AND AGE OF THE VICTIM AND THE LOCATION OF THE CRIME ARE THE STRONGEST INDICATORS FOR PREDICTING RECIDIVIST VICTIMS OF ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. FURTHER STUDY IS PLANNED.(AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...EB
