THIS TWO-PART REPORT PROVIDES PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL WITH INFORMATION ON THE KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES OF MILITARY, COMMERCIAL, AND IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE AND INCENDIARY DEVICES COMMONLY ENCOUNTERED.
Abstract
PART ONE COVERS HAND AND RIFLE GRENADES, THOSE EXPLOSIVE AND INCENDIARY DEVICES NORMALLY THROWN INTO THE TARGET AREA BY HAND OR PROJECTED FOR SHORT DISTANCES BY STANDARD AND IMPROVISED SMALL ARMS. THESE DEVICES CONSIST OF THREE MAJOR PARTS OR COMPONENTS, THE FUZE, THE BODY, AND THE FILLER. VARIETIES OF EACH OF THESE COMPONENTS ARE DESCRIBED. CORRECT IDENTIFICATION OF THE FUZE AND BODY SHOULD ENABLE THE INVESTIGATOR TO DETERMINE THE FUNCTIONING METHOD OF THE FUZE AND THE EFFECT PRODUCED IN THE CASE THAT THE GRENADE IS DETONATED OR IGNITED. PART TWO COVERS LAND MINES, ARTILLERY, MORTAR, AND ROCKET PROJECTILES. BOTH MILITARY AND TERRORIST USES OF LAND MINES ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS FEATURES OF LAND MINE FUZES AND VARIOUS TYPES OF LAND MINES (ANTITANK, ANTIPERSONNEL, AND CHEMICAL). IDENTIFICATION FEATURES OF ARTILLERY, MORTAR, AND ROCKET PROJECTILES ARE LISTED BY COLOR, MARKINGS, FUNCTION, FIN ASSEMBLY, MEASUREMENT, AND FRAGMENT TYPES. THE FINAL SECTION EXAMINES BOMBLET CONFIGURATIONS CURRENTLY IN USE. SMALL BOMBLETS EJECTED BY THE SAME PROJECTILE CAN STRIKE AND EXPLODE IN MANY AREAS. PICTURES OF THE DESCRIBED DEVICES ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT. AN INDEX IS PROVIDED. (DAG)
