This Technical Assistance Guide (TAG) provides suggestions and ideas for State Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to consider when creating and disseminating PDMP information to licensing/regulatory boards ("boards") and law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
This TAG was developed by a work group composed of PDMP administrators and convened by the PDMP Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) at Brandeis University. The PDMP administrators in the work group were from California, Florida, Idaho, Maine, and Oklahoma, with input from board and law enforcement investigators with whom they work. The threefold task of the work group was to 1) identify which data fields may be included in a report (Section I of this TAG); 2) detail report types and content (Section II); and 3) identify various report output options (Section III). In Section I, the data fields have been organized into five categories: Patient, Prescriber, Dispenser, and Dispensing Record. Recommended sub-categories within each of these categories are outlined. Section II of this TAG lists various report types and descriptions, as well as for which types of investigations the reports are useful. Section III lists various methods for providing PDMP information to investigators, noting their advantages and disadvantages. The appendices contain recommended data fields by segment and reports by investigation and agency type.
