COMPARISON OF RECONVICTION RATES FOR BORSTAL BOYS TREATED AT GRENDON, UNDER A THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY REGIME, WITH THOSE FOR A MATCHED SAMPLE OF BOYS WHO RECEIVED TRAINING AT VARIOUS OTHER BORSTALS.
Abstract
THE STATISTICS ANALYZED IN THIS REPORT TEND TO SUPPORT THE HYPOTHESIS THAT GRENDON TREATMENT BROUGHT ABOUT IMPROVED ADJUSTMENT ON DISCHARGE, AS REFLECTED IN THE RECONVICTION RATE AT ONE YEAR, BUT THE EFFECT DID NOT LAST LONG ENOUGH TO ALTER THE RATE AFTER TWO YEARS. ALTHOUGH THE EXACT BENEFICIAL IMPACT OF GRENDON TREATMENT COULD NOT BE ASSESSED, IT WAS FELT THAT RESULTS WERE SUFFICIENTLY ENCOURAGING TO MAKE EXTENDING THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY WORTHWHILE.
