Abstract
In these 12 months, 84 percent of offenses recorded by the police were against property; 12 percent were violent crimes. Offenses of violence against the person showed a 10-percent decrease; however, sexual offenses increased by 2 percent, and robberies increased by 6 percent. Both theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles decreased 2 percent. Domestic burglary fell by 6 percent, with non-domestic burglary decreasing by 2 percent. Robberies increased by 8.9 percent to 63,100, reversing the small decrease recorded during the previous year. Fraud and forgery offenses increased by 27.5 percent. A total of 29 percent of all crimes, including two-thirds of violent crimes, were cleared by police during 1998/99. Half of all detected crimes were cleared by using a charge or summons, and less than 1 in 12 were cleared by interviewing a convicted prisoner. Extensive tabular and graphic data
