METHODS AND MEANS FOR RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS, THE KINDS OF VOLUNTEERS TO RECRUIT, AND THE PERSONS WHO SHOULD DO THE RECRUITING ARE DEALT WITH IN THIS GUIDE.
Abstract
BASIC PREPARATORY STEPS FOR RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS ARE OUTLINED, INCLUDING POINTERS ON CLEARLY DEFINING PROJECT VOLUNTEER ROLES, ON UNDERSTANDING WHY VOLUNTEERS RATHER THAN ADDITIONAL STAFF ARE REQUIRED, ON EXPLORING VARIED OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS, AND ON PREPARING ADEQUATELY FOR THE RESPONSE FROM A RECRUITMENT DRIVE. RATIONALES AND MOTIVATIONS THAT INSPIRE PERSONS TO BECOME VOLUNTEERS ARE DISCUSSED. THE KINDS OF PERSONS BEST SUITED FOR THE JOB OF RECRUITMENT AND THE TYPES OF RECRUITMENT (I.E., BY A CENTRAL VOLUNTEER OFFICE OR BY THE AGENCY ITSELF) ARE EXPLORED. THE DISCUSSION TREATS THE TYPES OF SKILLS (MEDICAL, TEACHING, GENERAL) AND THE KINDS OF TARGET POPULATIONS TO BE RECRUITED, (E.G., VOLUNTEERS FROM THE YOUNG OR OLD POPULATION, OR FROM THE LOW-INCOME OR PHYSICALLY DISADVANTAGED POPULATIONS). TECHNIQUES FOR RECRUITING ARE EXAMINED, INCLUDING PERSON TO PERSON, PARTIES, TEAS, DINNERS, USE OF THE MEDIA (NEWSPAPER, TELEVISION, RADIO), AND SUCH ADDITIONAL MATERIALS AS BROCHURES, NEWSLETTERS, BULLETIN BOARDS, FILMS, MAIL, SLIDES, VIDEO TAPES, PHOTOGRAPHS, OR EXHIBITS. SPECIAL PROJECTS THAT CAN EITHER ATTRACT OR RETAIN VOLUNTEERS ARE DESCRIBED, SUCH AS VOLUNTEER FAIRS, RECOGNITION AND AWARDS, AND TELETHONS. FINALLY, A NUMBER OF QUOTATIONS ARE PRESENTED ON VARIOUS RECRUITING TECHNIQUES.
