This article discusses and illustrates the importance of community policing initiatives in reducing sexual assaults on campus.
Abstract
Community policing and combating sexual assaults on campuses are about building and developing partnerships to work toward solving community problems and crime. By combining the community policing philosophy with the empirical literature, efforts will be effective in reducing the pervasive and costly threat of sexual assault on campus communities. Setting the tone for the department's response is paramount. Departmental protocols and written policy will guide department staff on when and how they respond to reports of sexual assault. This article presents some clear examples of outreach and training programs that have shown positive results in the research and also illustrate the importance of law enforcement's role in sexual assault prevention and outreach programs. One example provided is self-defense programs which are a natural fit for most campus law enforcement and security departments. References
