This manual developed by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office (Louisiana) is issued to persons prior to their release from jail in order to provide them information and access to community resources that can assist them in building a secure, constructive, and crime-free life upon reentering the community.
Abstract
The manual first lists three keys to reentry success: "must change environment," "suitable housing," and "meaningful employment." This is followed by a "Reentry Checklist" that consists of a review of the person's reentry programs case plan status; identifying and beginning benefits eligibility online applications; identifying reentry release needs; assessing and applying for identification documents; and things to do at different time periods after release. The manual then presents 14 chapters, each of which provides information and guidance on an important aspect of a successful reentry. Chapter topics are identification/primary documents; housing; employment; careers; work ethics; transportation; money management; education; incarcerated veteran's programs, substance abuse and mental health; family/friend relationships; child support; restorative justice and victim awareness; and living under supervision.
