Abstract
One of the factors in leadership is appearance, since psychological studies confirm that the visual presence of an individual has a dramatic effect on the perceptions of others. Standing erect, maintaining a trim weight, having a neat appearance, and looking alert are aspects of appearance that facilitate leadership. Communication skills are important in motivating and guiding others in task performance. Effective communication involves avoidance of obscene language, the use of clear language, and feedback with questions and answers. Supervisors should be proficient in any task required of their subordinates and should have training skills. Leadership also derives from demonstrating to subordinates the professionalism, behavior, and attitudes required to perform effectively. Other leadership qualities are the equitable treatment of subordinates, the proper and strategic use of punishment and praise, and commitment to the agency and agency goals.
