Abstract
THE AUTHOR, A FORMER PROSECUTOR IN NEW JERSEY, DESCRIBES MANY OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AS A WHOLE. SPECIFICALLY, HE POINTS OUT THE LACK OF COORDINATION BETWEEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES, THE LACK OF IMAGINATIVE LEADERSHIP REQUIRED IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE PROBLEM OF TENURE IN THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE. IN ADDITION, PARTICULAR PROCEDURES JUSTIFYING CRITICAL EVALUATION, SUCH AS BAIL, WIRETAPS, USE OF THE POLYGRAPH IN INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS, POLICE WEAPONS, AND THE GRAND JURY ARE DISCUSSED.
