Abstract
THE SECTION OF THE BOOK FOCUSING ON LEGAL AND MORAL ISSUES IN CORRECTIONAL TREATMENT CONTAINS ONE PAPER THAT EXAMINES THE EFFECTS OF THE PREDICTION OF DANGEROUSNESS OF OFFENDERS ON THE DECISION TO PAROLE, WHILE A SECOND PAPER STUDIES THE SMALL GROUP OF BOYS WHO DO EXPERIENCE POSITIVE PERSONAL CHANGE DURING INCARCERATION, TOGETHER WITH A CONSIDERATION OF THE EXPLOITATION OF JUVENILES BY STAFF AND OTHER PRISONERS. IN FOCUSING ON THE GENERAL TOPIC OF SPECIAL OFFENDERS, THE PAPERS INCLUDED ADDRESS FEMALE FELONS AND DRUG OFFENDERS. WITH REFERENCE TO DRUG OFFENDERS, ONE STUDY EXAMINES THE INTELLECTS OF YOUTHFUL DRUG ABUSERS, AND ANOTHER DESCRIBES A TREATMENT-TEAM APPROACH TO INSTITUTIONALIZED ADDICTS. FOUR PAPERS ARE INCLUDED UNDER THE SECTION ON GRIEVANCE MECHANISMS AND MANAGEMENT. ONE VIEWS THE SUBJECT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A FEDERAL JUDGE WHOSE DUTIES INCLUDE PRESIDING OVER CIVIL RIGHTS CASES; A SECOND FROM THE CONTEXT OF PRISON ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS; A THIRD FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF A LABOR MEDIATOR; AND THE FOURTH FROM A SPECIFIC INSTITUTION'S APPROACH TO INMATE GOVERNANCE AND GRIEVANCE RESOLUTION. THE PORTION OF THE VOLUME DEALING WITH ADMINISTRATIVE AND PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES CONTAINS PAPERS ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF DEMANDS ON PRISON ADMINISTRATORS TO SEPARATE CUSTODY AND TREATMENT ROLES, THE CONCEPT OF OFFENDER RESPONSIBILITY, AND A COMPARISON OF SOME OUTSTANDING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SWEDISH CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM WITH THE SYSTEM THAT IS PREVALENT IN THE UNITED STATES. EACH OF THE FOUR PRINCIPAL SECTIONS OF THE BOOK IS PREFACED WITH AN EDITORIAL COMMENTARY AND A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF EACH PAPER. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED AT THE END OF EACH PAPER, AND FURTHER REFERENCES ARE AT THE END OF EACH EDITORIAL COMMENTARY. FOR SELECTED PAPERS, SEE NCJ 46621-46632.
