This article examines how the Toronto Police Department manages the videos in its custody.
Abstract
This article describes in detail the various stages that the Toronto Police Department's Video Service Unit (VSU) was required to go through to develop the a system to manage the video tapes that are received, created, and processed by the Department. These stages included: first labeling and storing all VHS tapes with the use of bar codes; second, converting all VHS tapes to DVD format; recording all activity in all jail cells in the city on a 24/7 basis using DVRs; and making sure that all the software packages used by the tape management system are compatible and perform the necessary functions. This system was created 15 years ago when the chief of police of the Toronto Police Department realized the need for an effective and efficient system to manage all the incoming and outgoing videos processed by the department. The VSU was created at that time to manage this process and to develop the system to handle the tapes.
