The regionalization of police canine units is viewed as a possible solution to resource and staffing problems experienced by individual police departments and as a way of offering a greater spectrum of coverage and services to communities in a particular region.
Abstract
The regionalization of any law enforcement effort is a large task, and a core planning group should be selected to develop priorities and objectives, evaluate available resources, and finalize performance measures. This planning process is critical to the success of a regionalized canine program. Police departments also face internal issues related to canine unit management, personnel selection, economic concerns, and liability. Once the decision has been made to implement a regionalized canine program, a sound transition plan should be developed. Performance indicators should be developed to assess the program once it is operational. The author concludes the regionalization of police canine units is a solution that can maximize police resources and enhance police services to communities. 7 endnotes
