This paper is in response to the comments of three authors on a study by William C. Wasmund on developing positive residential social climates.
Abstract
Improving self-concepts or developing positive residential social climates may not ensure successful community adjustment but they demonstrate that positive experiences do occur in the admittedly restrictive residential treatment environment. Although residential treatment costs have risen, community and school programs have not proliferated. School officials say that they want to end behavioral problems but insist that treatment has no place in school curricula. As long as this attitude remains, increasingly expensive residential treatment centers will overflow with youth who must be socialized away from society, restricted to become responsible, and incarcerated to become empowered.
