STUDY OF 928 YOUNG INMATES TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH OF A CONNECTION THERE IS BETWEEN ELEMENTARY SOCIAL FACTORS AND NEGATIVE LABELING.
Abstract
THE LABELING APPROACH TO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR PROPOSES THAT DEVIANT ROLES ARE CREATED AND MAINTAINED THROUGH TH IMPOSITION OF NEGATIVE LABELS. THE STUDY DEALT WITH A SAMPLE FROM FIVE JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN BAVARIA AND NORTH PHINE-WESTPHALIA. THE CRITERION FOR MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSES WAS A HETEROGENEOUS CRIMINAL LABELING INDEX COMPOSED OF CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FREQUENCY OF PUNISHMENT OR INTERNMENT AND THE INTENSITY OF PUNISHMENT, AS WELL AS AGE FACTORS. ALTHOUGH ONLY A MINIMAL, PRACTICALLY IRRELEVANT RELATIONSHIP COULD BE OBSERVED FOR THE SAMPLE UNDER STUDY, A MORE SUBSTANTIAL CONNECTION RESULTED FOR THE INDIVIDUAL INSTITUTIONS. IN ADDITION TO THE EXTENT OF THE RELATIONSHIP, THE STRUCTURES (THE BEST PREDICTORS IN INDIVIDUAL CASES) TURNED OUT TO BE SUBGROUP SPECIFIC. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) --IN GERMAN
