AFTER PROVIDING A THEORETICAL REVIEW OF MALADJUSTMENT AND DELINQUENCY, THE AUTHOR PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A STUDY OF 106 MALADJUSTED FINNISH BOYS IN WHICH THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN SEVERAL BACKGROUND VARIABLES WERE EXAMINED.
Abstract
RESEARCH PROJECTS AND RESULTS ON SUCH TOPICS AS DELINQUENCY, USE OF INTOXICANTS, DIFFICULTIES AT SCHOOL, RUNNING AWAY, VAGRANCY, AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR, AND SOCIALIZATION ARE EXAMINED IN THE THEORETICAL REVIEW. THE SUBJECTS FOR THE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH WERE BOYS AGED 12 TO 18 YEARS WHO WERE SENT TO A RECEPTION HOME AT OUTAMO BY THE PROTECTIVE EDUCATION OFFICE OF THE HELSINKA MUNICIPAL CHILD WELFARE BOARD. DATA ON THE BOYS WAS OBTAINED FROM THE RECORDS OF THE OUTAMO RECEPTION HOME. THE CRIMINAL REGISTER OF THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE, AND THE HELSINKI POLICE. THE TYPES OF VARIABLES STUDIED INCLUDED BACKGROUND VARIABLES SUCH AS FAMILIAL RELATIONSHIPS, EVENTS AT THE INSTITUTION, EVENTS AFTER LEAVING THE INSTITUTION, AND RESULTS OF TEST SCORES. THE RESULTS OF THE VARIABLE CORRELATION AND THE APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNIQUE IN ASSESSING WELFARE NEEDS ARE DISCUSSED.
