STUDY OF THE ONSET, FREQUENCY, AND SERIOUSNESS OF DELINQUENCY AMONG OFFENDERS UP TO 14 YEARS OF AGE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO SUBSEQUENT ADOLESCENT DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
THE STUDY LOOKED AT OVER 2000 DELINQUENT ACTS COMMITTED FROM 1956 TO 1965 BY 1300 CHILDREN IN A LARGE WEST GERMAN CITY AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA. POLICE RECORDS ON INDIVIDUAL OFFENDERS CONFIRMED THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE MORE FREQUENTLY A CHILD COMMITTED DELINQUENT ACTS, THE MORE LIKELY IT WAS THAT HE WOULD COMMIT THEM IN ADOLESCENCE. HOWEVER, NO SIGNIFICANCE COULD BE DETERMINED REGARDING THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE EARLY OFFENSES OR REGARDING THE AGE AT WHICH THE FIRST ONE WAS COMMITTED. THE SERIOUSNESS OF A CHILD'S OFFENSE WAS DEFINED IN TERMS OF HIS OWN CONCEPTION OF IT AS A DEVIATION FROM ACCEPTED NORMS. THIS CONCEPT WAS INFERRED FROM AN ANALYSIS OF POLICE RECORDS OF EACH CASE. INCLUDED ARE STATISTICAL DIAGRAMS SHOWING THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY AND AN INVENTORY OF THE VIOLATIONS OF THE CRIMINAL CODE WHICH WERE STUDIED. --IN GERMAN
