This article investigates cost–effective technological solutions for community supervision.
Abstract
This article discusses various methods for remote location supervision of offenders whose movements have been restricted, such as electronic monitoring (EM) and supervision using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The author believes that officers engaged in such supervision should use their own computers and Internet connections to access a central monitoring center where they can input data pertaining to particular cases. The advantage is greater efficiency and accuracy. This system also enables officers to receive violation notifications in a more timely manner. Officers thereby are better able to manage their own resources and spend more time in the community. Remote location supervision also helps the correctional agency balance caseloads and keep better statistics. 3 figures, 4 endnotes
