THE APPROPRIATE REORGANIZATION OF VARIABLES IN SOME ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE DESIGNS IS NOTED AS A WAY OF MAKING THE OBTAINED RESULTS MORE EASILY INTERPRETABLE, WITH EMPHASIS ON MULTIDIMENSIONAL CONTINGENCY TABLES.
Abstract
BY REDEFINING VARIABLES BEING INVESTIGATED IN FACTORIAL DESIGNS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO TRANSFORM WHAT IS A HIGH-ORDER INTERACTION EFFECT IN TERMS OF THE OLD VARIABLES INTO A MAIN EFFECT OR LOW-ORDER EFFECT IN TERMS OF THE NEW VARIABLES AND VICE VERSA. THE DISCUSSION ON VARIABLE REORGANIZATION IS LIMITED TO DESIGNS IN WHICH EACH FACTOR IS FIXED AND HAS ONLY TWO LEVELS. PRINCIPLES OF REORGANIZATION APPLY DIRECTLY TO ANY SUBSETS OF DICHOTOMOUS FIXED FACTORS WITHIN A LARGER DESIGN THAT MAY ALSO INCLUDE MULTILEVEL AND RANDOM FACTORS. THE POSSIBILITY OF REORGANIZATION RESULTS IN METHODOLOGICAL ADVANTAGES UNIQUE TO MULTIDIMENSIONAL CONTINGENCY TABLE ANALYSIS, DUE TO THE MORE COMPLEX NATURE OF SOME TESTS FOR NONHIERARCHICAL AS OPPOSED TO HIERARCHICAL HYPOTHESES. EQUATIONS FOR AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE REORGANIZATION OF VARIABLES IN A FACTORIAL DESIGN ARE GIVEN. A RULE FOR DETERMINING CORRESPONDENCES OF EFFECTS AND THE INCREASED FLEXIBILITY OF EXPERIMENTAL DESIGNS ARE DISCUSSED. THE IMPLICATIONS OF VARIABLE REORGANIZATION FOR NONORTHOGONAL ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE, AS WELL AS ITS APPLICATION TO CONTINGENCY TABLE ANALYSIS, ARE DETAILED. REFERENCES ARE LISTED. (DEP)
