This report presents data on all persons (n=1,283) admitted to Hong Kong's Drug Addiction Treatment Centre (DATC) in 2003.
Abstract
The DATC is operated by the Correctional Services Department under a 1969 ordinance. The program provides residential treatment for convicted drug addicts and offers the courts an alternative to sending a drug addict to prison. The program's goal is total rehabilitation of drug addicts, which means they lead a drug-free and useful life. This report's data on program participants in 2003 addresses personal attributes, family characteristics, place of residence, addiction information, and criminal history. This information was obtained through personal interviews upon admission to the center. Personal attributes include age at admission, place of birth, educational attainment, and occupation and employment history. Information on family covers marital status and living arrangements. Data on residence address district of residence and type of accommodation. Drug addiction details pertain to age at first drug use, reported cause and peer association when drug use began, types of drugs abused, daily cost of drugs, method of taking drugs, procurement of drugs by district, and length of addiction. Data on criminal history encompass triad (gang) affiliation, age of first conviction, first offense, previous convictions, previous institutional sentences, and current offense.
