Graphs and tables illustrate this statistical report of escapes occurring in fiscal year 1980 in Virginia. Data were obtained from the files of the Virginia Department of Corrections record unit.
Abstract
There were 88 felon escapes from the Virginia correctional system during the year, representing an increase of 2.3 percent over the previous year. Of the escapees, 72.7 percent were white males and 27.3 percent were nonwhite males, 30.7 percent were not yet eligible for parole at the time of the escape, 10 were parole violators, and most were single and had normal or above intelligence. The largest number of escapes occurred during the month of June, and most escapes occurred during the first and second years of confinement, and 56.8 percent of escapees were serving sentences of property offenses and 33 percent for offenses against persons. Data are also given on escapees' military service, custody status, institution assigned, time remaining free after the escape, and crimes committed while at large. An explanation of the data source is appended. (Author abstract modified)
