According to data recently collected by the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, child maltreatment related fatalities continued to rise in 1988, with a five-percent increase over the number reported in 1987.
Abstract
Due to the complexity of this problem, the causes for these deaths are not always self-evident or absolute. Victims often come from multiproblem families. Drug and alcohol abuse are cited increasingly more often as the predominant factor in either reducing a parent's ability to monitor their child or giving rise to violent behavior. To reduce the number of children dying from abuse and neglect, State administrators have focused their efforts along several different domains, such as developing formal or informal death review committees and improved monitoring of repeated "unsubstantiated" reports of child abuse. Other prevention strategies include development of a wide range of interventions targeted to all first-time parents, providing crisis services to all parents under stress, and improvement in the present case management system. 7 references.
