This 1987 report on Massachusetts' female offenders highlights progress made to date, future plans, and unresolved issues in providing services for female inmates.
Abstract
Some areas needing improvement are correctional staff training in mental health issues and improved access to crisis intervention services. A number of treatment alternatives have been developed to ensure appropriate placement of acutely alcoholic women who have been civilly committed. Treatment options have also been expanded for sentenced substance-abusing women. Two programs provide employment planning and counseling to women approaching release, and 25 percent of the women incarcerated at Framingham participate in educational programs. The report recommends the creation of an advisory council to participate in State and County planning for the long term and to ensure continued programmatic gains and planned allocation of resources.
