Since the 1971 enactment of drug legislation in South Carolina that created a permanent drug and narcotics study committee within the General Assembly, the members have worked to become knowledgeable and stay abreast of activities in drug education, treatment, aftercare, rehabilitation, and law enforcement.
Abstract
During the 1987-1988 legislative session, the Committee focused on a number of major alcohol and drug abuse-related issues and proposals. Representatives of various State divisions and State and community leaders testified on the Involuntary Commitment Law, Dually-diagnosed Individuals, South Carolina Network of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, SCCADA Funding, Opposition to Sunday Beer Sales, Legislation Limiting Drink Promotions, Realistic Taxation of Alcoholic Beverages in South Carolina, and legislation on Watercraft DUI and the Highway Safety Act. The report includes information on the State's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Department of Corrections, Department of Education substance abuse programs, law enforcement division, Department of Mental Health projects, and rehabilitation programs.
