THIS BOOK, THE THIRD OF SEVEN VOLUMES, IS A COMPILATION OF STUDIES AND ARTICLES REGARDING THE CONTENT OF VIOLENCE IN CANADIAN NEWS, FILM, AND TELEVISION.
Abstract
EACH SECTION OF THIS BOOK IS A SEPARATE STUDY. THE FIRST STUDY, WHICH CONTAINED A SAMPLE OF 109 TELEVISION PROGRAMS, ANALYZED THE CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMS AND PROVIDED INFORMATION ABOUT GLOBAL OR GENERAL MESSAGES, GROUP PORTRAYALS, INCIDENTS OF AGGRESSION, INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE, FREQUENCY OF AGGRESSIVE EPISODES, AND FREQUENCY OF ARGUMENT EPISODES. INFORMATION WAS ALSO SUPPLIED ABOUT THE CONTEXT JUSTIFICATION FOR THE USE OF VIOLENCE. THE SECOND STUDY APPROACHES TELEVISION AS A NEW MYTHOLOGY IN THE SENSE OF COMPARISON TO TRADITIONAL MYTHOLOGY. VARIOUS THEORIES ARE OFFERED ABOUT THE ROLE OF VIOLENCE IN MYTHS AND TELEVISION. THE THIRD STUDY IS A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE AND FRENCH-LANGUAGE TELEVISION PROGRAMMING. THE FIRST PART OF THIS REPORT ANALYZES AND COMPARES PRIME-TIME TELEVISION AVAILABILITY AUDIENCE RATINGS BY TYPES OF PROGRAMS. THE SECOND PART OF THE REPORT CONSISTS OF A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF INDIVIDUAL EPISODES OF FRENCH-LANGUAGE TELEVISION ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS OF SETTING, CHARACTERS, RELATIONSHIPS, CONFLICT, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, AND GLOBAL MESSAGES ARE ANALYZED. A SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH RESULTS IS PROVIDED. THE LAST THREE STUDIES IN THE COMPILATION DEAL WITH INDIVIDUAL CONTENT ANALYSES OF FEATURE FILMS, NEWSPAPER AND TELEVISION, AND RADIO. EACH STUDY IS FOLLOWED BY FOOTNOTES; BIBLIOGRAPHY; AND APPENDIXES CONTAINING CHARTS, TABLES, AND QUESTIONNAIRES.
