This report summarizes the findings and recommendations of a committee that was part of a national task force on youth suicide and that focused on prevention strategies for the future.
Abstract
The committee examined the cost-effectiveness of various prevention strategies, made recommendations for programs and research, developed an implementation plan, and worked to develop a consensus among professionals and laypersons. The committee commissioned 11 research papers and sponsored a conference to discuss the subject. Workshops at the conference focused on public health approaches, mental health services, health services, education, religion and youth activities, the justice system, social services and family support, the role of business and philanthropy, and the media. The committee concluded that further research, evaluation of prevention efforts, and cooperative prevention efforts involving many disciplines are needed.
