Abstract
In the appellate courts, there were 1,733 filings and 1,716 dispositions in 1981, an increase of 7 percent and 13.6 percent, respectively, from 1980. Since 1971, the number of appellate court filings soared 162.6 percent, or an average of 16.3 percent a year. Cases involving domestic relations (dissolutions and child custody) composed 37.2 percent of the formal appellate decisions in civil cases, the largest single category of dispositions. In the trial court, civil filings escalated 154 percent since 1956, while the number of criminal filings rose 497.8 percent during this same 25-year period. Iowa's population grew 7 percent during this time. Tables, figures, and maps are provided. (Author summary modified)
