This report from the California State Department of Education (SDE) to the legislative fiscal committees, the Office of the Legislative Analyst, and the Department of Finance describes the SDE's teen pregnancy coordinator's (TPC) activities from December 1, 1988, through May 31, 1989.
Abstract
In December 1988, the SDE appointed a TPC to facilitate communication between SDE staff persons overseeing SDE's many programs addressing the special needs of pregnant and parenting teens and teens at risk of unintentional pregnancy. During the first 6 months of the TPC's performance, her contributions have included increasing technical assistance, strengthening relationships with the field, and laying the foundation for future efforts to provide comprehensive coordinated services to pregnant and parenting teens in the State. In this report, an activities summary for these 6 months is presented under the categories of technical assistance, coordination activities, legislative activities, media coverage, products, and activities in progress. Activities in progress include the oversight of the implementation of "New Chance" demonstration sites in California, a multiyear national project designed to address the critical issues of teen childbearing, youth unemployment, and long-term welfare dependency; the development of a programmatic database for school-based programs serving pregnant and parenting teens; and the development of programmatic prevention/intervention services targeting teen fathers. 4 tables, glossary, 20 references.
