In 1989, the 32 instances of electronic surveillance or wiretapping in Maryland represented a decrease of nearly 18 percent over the previous year; the number of counties using electronic surveillance decreased by 22.2 percent.
Abstract
Thirty one (96.9 percent) of the requests for surveillance involved violations of controlled and dangerous substances laws; one request involved an investigation for murder conspiracy. Although one phone wiretap was used on a mobile phone, most were used in business locations (40.6 percent) and single family homes (31.2 percent) with small proportions used on pay phones (18 percent) and in apartments (6.3 percent). The report notes that 7.4 percent of total interceptions were incriminating and that 46 persons were arrested as a result of the surveillances.
