This working group report outlines the AIDS prevention strategy that was followed by the Public Health Service (PHS) subsequent to the Coolfont Conference in 1986.
Abstract
The concept of informing the general public as well as groups at particular risk of contracting AIDS is the fundamental principle behind PHS prevention policy. PHS has also made a financial commitment to responding specifically to the needs of minorities, especially blacks and Hispanics, who are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. The report describes the goals and objectives associated with 10 priority issues. These include counseling, testing, and partner notification; AIDS transmission through intravenous drug abuse; perinatal transmission of HIV; sexual transmission; information for the general public; HIV transmission among minorities; educating school and college-age youth; and educating health care workers and other caregivers. Other priority issues involve medical devices for the diagnosis and treatment of AIDS, behavior change research related to HIV prevention, and program evaluation. 6 notes
