A working group of experts examined the problem of juvenile crime in Great Britain and made a series of recommendations to assist in reducing juvenile delinquency.
Abstract
The working group recommended that families under stress receive supportive services, young people be formally educated in what constitutes good parenting, and local agencies work together to identify juvenile crime patterns and to solve problems of juvenile crime. Additional roles in reducing juvenile crime were mapped out for the police, the schools, and two agencies serving youth: the social services and the probation service. The working group recommended that local young people be appointed as full members of community crime prevention panels. Additionally, the working group said that local businesses and chambers of commerce should play a role in helping to prevent juvenile crime. Court diversion methods should also be explored. The working group estimated that in 1988 there will be approximately 4.3 million juveniles between the ages of 10 and 16 in the population of England and Wales, thus reinforcing the seriousness of the problem of juvenile crime.
