This research update summarizes five new studies in the field of drug court research.
Abstract
This article offers five summations of recent evaluations and research in the area of drug courts. The first article, Recidivism and the Utah Juvenile Court found that compared to a statistically similar group of non-juvenile drug court youths, the participants had significantly lower recidivism rates based on a one-year post-service follow up. The second article, Delaware Drug Court Evaluation perceived Delaware's urban and rural drug courts as well defined, well implemented, and effective. The third article, Florida's First Judicial Circuit Drug Court Evaluation was a 30-month follow up study showing a comparison group of non-drug court participants were twice as likely to be rearrested as graduates of Florida drug courts. The fourth article, Riverside County Drug Court Evaluation showed that participants in the Recovery Opportunity Center, a California day treatment program had significantly greater reductions in arrest rates when compared to non-participants. The fifth article, Maine's First Drug Court Evaluation showed that during the first 12-months of the program, 25 clients (or 49 percent) did not relapse. Seventy-eight clients were not charged for new offenses, and 8 percent of the graduates recidivated compared to 66.7 percent of expelled participants.
