This paper presents a brief history of the use of the x-ray and the design parameters of a portable micro-focus x-ray for use in identifying possible improvised bombs placed in luggage or other containers and used by terrorists.
Abstract
The explosion of Pan American Airlines Flight 103 in 1988 underscored the need for explosive detectors capable of rapidly processing passenger luggage and air cargo and of detecting plastic and other explosives. This and other recent bombings indicate an increase in the technical sophistication of terrorists and the resulting need for additional techniques to detect these devices before they reach their target or detonate. X-ray screening has long been recognized as a useful tool in detecting explosives. Recent research has focused on developing a portable micro-focus x-ray system capable of providing ultra high-resolution radiographs as well as able to be used with other advanced imaging systems. The system, the MicroScan, represents only the first step in the continuing process of engineering systems and methods capable of detecting explosives. Figures. (Author abstract modified)
