RESULTS OF MAJOR PROJECTS CONDUCTED BY BOTH THE DUTCH RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRE OF THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE AND BY OUTSIDE INSTITUTES OR INDIVIDUALS ON JUSTICE-RELATED SUBJECTS ARE SUMMARIZED.
Abstract
STUDIES BY INSTITUTES RELATE TO CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE WHO COMMIT VIOLENT ROBBERY; TO EFFECTS OF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR ACTION ON THE RECIDIVISM PATTERNS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS; TO CRIME TRENDS IN A NEW RESIDENTIAL AREA OF SOUTHERN FLEVOLAND, AS EVIDENCED BY DAILY POLICE REPORTS; TO THE EXTENT OF HIDDEN RECIDIVISM, I.E., NEW OFFENSES DURING REHABILITATION WITHOUT FURTHER CONTACT WITH THE LAW; TO FRAUD IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND AGGRESSIVE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION; TO CONSEQUENCES OF IMPRISONMENT ACCORDING TO INTERVIEWS WITH INMATES; AND TO THE LEGAL POSITION OF MINORS, ESPECIALLY REGARDING PROBLEMS BETWEEN CHILDREN AND PARENTS. MINISTRY OF JUSTICE STUDIES TREAT THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF CRIME IN RETAIL TRADE; THE EFFECT OF REMISSIONS ON RECIDIVISM; TYPES AND EFFECTIVENESS OF ALTERNATIVE SANCTIONS; AND PROVIDING EQUITABLE SENTENCES BEFORE THE LAW, AS VIEWED BY MEMBERS OF THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE IN THE ARNHEM DISTRICT. ALSO EXAMINED ARE THE EXTENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF CRIME ACCORDING TO EXPERIENCES OF A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF THE DUTCH POPULATION AND AN ASSESSMENT OF VICTIM REPORTING PRACTICES; THE NATURE OF POLICE PATROL ACTIVITIES IN ONE LARGE, ONE MEDIUM-SIZED, AND SIX COUNTRY MUNICIPALITIES; SHORTCOMINGS IN AN INVESTIGATION OF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR POLICIES TOWARD THE NONINSTITUTION OF PROCEEDINGS AND THE SENTENCING PRACTICES OF THE BENCH; AND THE ROLE OF THE JUDGE IN SOCIETY, BASED ON A LITERATURE SURVEY OF DUTCH PUBLICATIONS. --IN ENGLISH.
