THIS STUDY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN JAPANESE PENAL INSTITUTIONS SURVEYS INMATE EDUCATIONAL PREFERENCES AND ANALYZES OPTIMAL ACTIVITY SCHEDULING.
Abstract
TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN JAPANESE PENAL INSTITUTIONS RANGE FROM ACTUAL INSTRUCTION IN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS TO LECTURES GIVEN BY SOCIAL OR RELIGIOUS WORKERS, AS WELL AS ORGANIZED SOCIAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS MOVIES. CONCLUSIONS ARE LARGELY BASED ON DATA GATHERED FROM DETAILED INMATE SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRES. ATTENTION IS ALSO GIVEN IN THE STUDY TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MAKING EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE INMATE'S DAILY ROUTINE, AS OPPOSED TO RELEGATING SUCH ACTIVITIES TO EVENING, NOONTIME, OR SUNDAY PERIODS. INMATES MAY THEN COME TO SEE ALL SUCH ACTIVITIES AS PART OF THEIR BASIC REHABILITATION PROGRAM, RATHER THAN AS EITHER ENTERTAINMENT OR IRRELEVANT PASTIMES. WITH BETTER SCHEDULING OF THESE ACTIVITIES, INMATES MAY ALSO BE ABLE TO GIVE THEM MORE ENERGY AND ATTENTION. INMATES WERE SURVEYED AND OBSERVED BY VARIOUS GROUPINGS FOR CONTROL PURPOSES, AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY PREFERENCES WERE EXAMINED IN DETAIL AND RANKED ON THE BASIS OF SURVEY DATA. LITERACY CLASSES AND HOBBY AND PASTIME ACTIVITIES WERE RATED HIGHEST OVERALL, WHILE ETHICAL TRAINING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES WERE RATED AS LEAST DESIRED BY INMATES SURVEYED. THERE ARE NUMEROUS TABLES AND CHARTS TO ORGANIZE THE DATA COLLECTED. --IN JAPANESE.
