Abstract
Books, reports, anthologies, and theoretical papers are among the nearly 1,000 listings included in the bibliography, organized into the major categories of the dynamics of wife battering, the roots of wife battering, research on men who batter, intervention, and program resources. The subcategories are patriarchy and relationships; masculinity and the sex role; anger, aggression, and violence; batterer characteristics; sexual assault; alcohol abuse; treatment issues; men's programs; counseling for couples; surveys, evaluations, and assessments; police and community intervention; self-help books; program manuals; films; resource centers; periodicals; and reference books. In the preface and overview, the author emphasizes that battering men are motivated by a distorted conception of manhood. He says that the most appropriate intervention is men's programs that address the batterer's conception and encourage men to take responsibility for their actions; and that such programs, in order to be efficient, need support from the community and society at large.
