Abstract
The first paper, “Recorded Assault Offenses 1950-1997: Changing Structure and Influencing Factors of Assault Criminality from the 1950’s to the 1990’s,” draws on police-recorded assault statistics to map the changing trends in assault offenses over the past 45 years. The second paper, “Children and Young People at Work,” presents findings from a pilot study designed to uncover the prevalence of children and young people in working life, the meaning that work holds for them, their working conditions, and the conditions of their employment. The third paper reports on Finnish population surveys concerning adults’ fear of crime and level of violent victimization and accidents in this country. The fourth paper reports on the quality of government bills from the perspective of Parliament committee work and investigates how public measures have impacted law drafting activities. The fifth paper examines the functioning of the Finnish legal system, especially as it pertains directly to citizens’ lives and major concerns. The sixth paper explores the everyday lives of reconstituted families, especially concerning the participation in domestic chores, family finances, and the care of children. The seventh paper discusses crime trends in Finland for the time period 1990 through 1999. The eighth paper explores how recent changes in criminal processing procedures have impacted the functioning of local courts. The ninth paper reports on a survey of Finnish adults concerning their assessments of their legal problems and their experiences with the legal system, particularly their interactions with lawyers. Finally, the tenth paper in this volume presents the results of the 2000 sweep of the International Crime Victims Survey in Finland. Note that summaries only are provided for each paper.
