STUDIES IN THE AREA OF PROGRESSIVE CLASSIFICATION ARE CITED TO SHOW THE INFLUENCE OF RESEARCH ON ACTUAL CORRECTIONAL REFORM.
Abstract
PROGRESSIVE CLASSIFICATION IS THE SYSTEMATIC CLASSIFICATION OF OFFENDERS BY THEIR CHARACTERISTICS AND PROGRESS IN CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS. RESEARCH STUDIES DATING BACK TO 1923 ARE REVIEWED AS TO THE BACKGROUND THEY PROVIDED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF PAROLE PREDICTION METHODS (SUCH AS BASE EXPECTANCIES REGARDING PAROLE OUTCOMES) USED IN CALIFORNIA'S WORK UNIT PROGRAM FOR PAROLE ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION. RESEARCH EFFORTS IN THE AREAS OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION BY REWARD INSTEAD OF PUNISHMENT AND OFFENDER RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS OWN TREATMENT ARE ALSO REVIEWED. A THREE-PAGE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED.
