A survey of 600 randomly selected single-family residential burglary victims and 600 neighbors of victims from May 1, 1981, through April 30, 1982, in 5 counties and Atlanta, Ga., sought to determine which preventive measures used by nonvictims were significantly different from those at the burglarized homes.
Abstract
Nonvictims used charley bars on sliding glass doors, had solid exterior doors, and used deadbolt locks more often than victims. Other significant factors were the use of burglar alarms, cars in the driveway during the day, and arrangements for mail and newspapers to be picked up daily or to be cancelled when residents were out of town. Study data, profile of a burglary-resistant home, and the survey instrument are included.
